As such information was previously unknown to him, Moana is confused by Tamatoa’s words. She nonetheless escapes from her cell while Tamatoa is distracted and uses a fortune double from Te Fiti’s heart to divert attention from Maui. The two escape, and once they are safe, Maui thanks Moana for her help, though he reprimands himself for failing to defeat Tamatoa and almost let Moana be killed accordingly. Following on three years after the first movie we find Moana (Cravalho) exploring nearby islands from her home of Motunui. In a vision, she hears her ancestors speaking to her, calling her to a new quest. She must find a way to rediscover the lost island of Motu Fetu in order to defeat the storm god Nalo and protect her people from extinction. So Moana, brave as ever, builds a crew and heads out into the open ocean to begin her next adventure, and it’s safe to say she encounters a bump or two along the way.

Moana sets sail on a camakau from the cavern along with her dimwitted pet rooster, Heihei, who stowed away on it. They are caught in a typhoon and shipwrecked on an island, where she finds Maui, who boasts about his achievements. She demands Maui return the heart, but he refuses and traps her in a cave before leaving on her boat.
However, on her latest excursion, she finds a clay jar, with the help of Heihei, proving that there are people out there. Moana returns home where she is reunited with the villagers and her family. She takes her little sister to that cave where Tala showed Moana their history and tells Simea about Tautai Vasa.

Despite this, Moana loves her father and wishes to live up to his expectations when taking his place as chief of Motunui. When discovering Motunui being affected by Te Kā’s curse and that she has been chosen by the Ocean to restore the Heart of Te Fiti, Moana attempts to again persuade her father, along with their people to leave Motuni so they can help restore the heart. However, her father is infuriated to hear Moana has discovered their ancestors’ boats and proceeds to burn them, despite Moana’s objections. Their argument is cut short when they hear that Gramma Tala is suddenly dying, leading Moana and her father to stand by his mother’s deathbed.
Maui’s narcissism and arrogance immediately disgusted Moana and though she was amazed to learn of the benefits Maui offered to mankind, she was angered when the demigod tricked and trapped her in a cave in order to steal her boat. Upon escaping the cave and being helped by Ocean to desperately get back to her boat, Moana angrily confronted Maui, who continuously threw her off the boat, only for Ocean to repeatedly put her back on it. When Moana revealed the Heart of Te Fiti to Maui, she was amused to discover he was traumatized by the sight of it. She did not believe that anyone dangerous would appear if she showed the Heart around until the Kakamora revealed themselves before Moana and Maui. After successfully restoring the Heart of Te Fiti and saving Motunui, Moana began a new era of wayfinding where she was watched by her grandmother’s manta ray reincarnation, showing she was still being looked after by Tala through a different life form. When Moana got into another argument with her father, after attempting to convince him to help restore the Heart in attempt to save Motunui, Moana and her father were informed that Tala was suddenly dying, much to their shock.
Moana was able to rescue Pua, but got her foot injured when it was stuck in some coral before she joined Pua in making it back to shore. As they climb a mountain to reach the entrance to the underworld, Maui questions why the ocean chose Moana to save the world, though she doesn’t seem to know, herself. Despite her sudden feeling of self-doubt, Moana follows Maui into Lalotai, and eventually finds the fishhook.
